Dear Tai Gedi,
On Earth Day, and every day, we're proud to call ourselves one of the world's most sustainable airlines. One of the ways we do this is with CO2ZERO, the service that offers passengers the opportunity to fly CO2 neutral and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Our other initiatives? Read more about them below!

Did you know that...

• 1 of every 535 passengers used CO2ZERO in 2017?

• In 2017, there was a 50% increase in the number of passengers that used the service from 2016. We went from 40,000 to 60,000 in just one year!

• In ten years, our passengers have compensated for more than 260,000 tons of CO2 emissions? The contributions were invested mainly in improved charcoal burners in African countries. Now, your contribution supports a reforestation initiative in Panama.

What do we do with on board waste?

This year's theme for Earth Day is ending the enormous plastic pollution. KLM's ambition is to reduce waste 50% by 2025 compared with 2011. One example to prevent waste is to replace newspapers with the KLM Media App which accounts for almost 794,000 lbs less weight and onboard waste. The second route? Good, old-fashioned recycling.

Sustainability in the cockpit
Auke, one of our concious captains explains: "Instead of flying at a constant speed we are now able to adjust our speed to the actual conditions. This reduces the amount of fuel, and consequently the amount of CO2 emissions.
Another measure we've taken is to step away from paper flight plans, journey logs and operating manuals. Instead, we now use an iPad. This saves about 15,000 sheets of paper a day, plus the weight of all the manuals toner cassettes for printing".
